Freedman’s Bureau
The Freedmen’s Bureau and its associated Freedman’s Bank began their operations in Richmond, Virginia, in March 1865. Initially, they were housed in two frame buildings located at the intersection of 10th and Broad Streets. These facilities served as the central hub for the Bureau’s activities, which included reuniting families, legalizing marriages, and providing essential services such as education, food, clothing, job placement, and legal assistance to formerly enslaved individuals.
